Probably came from the fact that Poker originated from four men playing the game on a Mississippi Riverboat in 1832.

Actually “the nuts” mean a hand who cannot be beat (at a specific moment of the game).
For example: your hole cards are: 5.6 of heart and the flop come:3.4.2. with 2heart. At the moment you have the nuts, no hand can’t beat you.
